What do IP protection standards mean?
We often see these two associated letters - IP - at the
level of electronic devices (smartphones, lights ... etc.). But what are these
two letters often followed by two numbers? Explanations.
IP standards
The IP protection standards, in English, "Ingress
protection" comes from an international standard set up by the IEC
(International Electrotechnical Commission) relating to waterproofing. They
appear for the first time in 1989. You should know that this code corresponds
to the degrees of protection that justify a material. In fact, if a luminaire
is used outside, it is good that the latter has several protections that allow
it to withstand external aggressions, given its use. These standards are thus
present to indicate to the buyer the protection available to the product he
wishes to acquire. It is in the format: IP 67. Each element will be pronounced
in this way: "IP six-seven”. Sometimes, we can also resort to the use of
letters. For example, we can have IP2x. This means that the device has solid
body intrusion protection greater than 12mm, but the "x" indicates
that protection against liquid body intrusion is not required for use.
